About Us

The academy operates 6 faculties and 4 academic departments

1) Theatre arts, 2) Film and TV, 3) Choreography, 4) Painting, sculpture and design, 5) Art studies, 6) Music arts. There are 23 departments preparing specialists, including 17 production and 6 general academic departments. In 2008, the department for professional development and retraining was established.

Since December 2001, the Republican College of Fine Arts has been part of the academy, marking the beginning of multidisciplinary art education: boarding school – grades 7-9 (initial art training), college (technical and vocational education), higher education institution, and postgraduate studies (Master's and Doctorate PhD).

1955

The academy’s history began in 1955 when the theatre department was established at the Kurmangazy Conservatory (now the Conservatory), laying the foundation for its development.

1977

In 1977, the Almaty State Institute of Theatre and Fine Arts (AMTKI) was established. Under the leadership of Rector G. Zhanisbaev, the first teachers and organizers made a significant contribution to the development of theatre and art in the country.

1979

In 1979, the Faculty of Fine Arts was established, where renowned artists and art figures taught.

1989

On January 28, 1989, the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR adopted a resolution to name the Almaty State Institute of Theatre and Fine Arts after Temirbek Karauly Zhurgenov.

1991

In 1991, two specialized higher education institutions were established based on AMTKI: the Kazakh State Institute of Theatre and Cinema named after T.Q. Zhurgenov and the Kazakh State Academy of Fine Arts.

2001

In 2001, the academy was named the Kazakh National Academy of Arts after T.Q. Zhurgenov, turning it into one of the leading educational institutions in the fields of education and culture.

2008

In 2008, by the decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Arystanbek Mukhamediuly was appointed as the rector of the Kazakh National Academy of Arts named after T.Q. Zhurgenov.

2014

In 2014, by the decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Bibigul Nusipzhanova was appointed as the rector of the Kazakh State Academy of Fine Arts named after T. Zhurgenov.

2018

In November 2018, by the decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Ashat Mayemyrov was appointed as the rector of the Kazakh State Academy of Fine Arts named after T. Zhurgenov.

2019

In August 2019, Akan Zhilqysbaevuly Abdualiyev was appointed as the rector of the Kazakh State Academy of Fine Arts named after T. Zhurgenov.

2022

In February 2022, Azamat Satybaldy was appointed as the rector of the Kazakh State Academy of Fine Arts named after T. Zhurgenov.

2024

In January 2024, Arman Adilkhanuly Zhudebaev was appointed as the rector of the Kazakh State Academy of Fine Arts named after T. Zhurgenov.
