Within the Framework of Events Dedicated to the 800th Anniversary of the Ulus of Jochi
As part of the implementation of the Media Plan for Promoting the Historical Heritage of the Ulus of Jochi, initiated by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Temirbek Zhurgenov Kazakh National Academy of Arts will host a Scientific Round Table entitled “The Image of the Golden Horde in Cinema, Theatre, and Visual Culture” on 14 August 2026.
The event aims to explore the historical heritage of the Ulus of Jochi (the Golden Horde) through the perspectives of contemporary cinema, theatre, and visual culture, while strengthening historical awareness, promoting the traditions of Kazakh statehood, and encouraging new artistic approaches to interpreting the nation’s historical legacy.
The preservation and promotion of historical and cultural heritage have become important priorities in the humanities and the arts. In this context, the round table will serve as an interdisciplinary academic platform for discussing historical memory, national cultural identity, and contemporary artistic representations of the Golden Horde in cinema, theatre, and visual culture.
The programme will address the historical and cultural legacy of the Ulus of Jochi, the role of the Golden Horde in shaping national identity, its representation in film, theatre, and visual arts, as well as innovative approaches to interpreting historical narratives through contemporary artistic practice.
The round table is of particular importance for early-career researchers, doctoral candidates, master’s students, and undergraduate students. It provides valuable opportunities to develop research skills, engage with current academic debates, exchange ideas with leading scholars and practitioners, and deepen understanding of Kazakhstan’s history and cultural heritage. The event also encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and supports the professional development of the next generation of researchers and artists.
The outcomes of the round table are expected to contribute to strengthening historical consciousness, promoting knowledge of the origins of Kazakh statehood, and advancing new artistic interpretations of the historical heritage of the Ulus of Jochi. Such academic initiatives play an important role in preserving national values, fostering civic responsibility and patriotism, and promoting Kazakhstan’s cultural heritage within the international academic and artistic community.

The opening address will be delivered by Arman Adilkhanovich Zhudebayev, Rector of the Temirbek Zhurgenov Kazakh National Academy of Arts, Honoured Worker of Kazakhstan and recipient of the Qurmet Order.
Presentations will be delivered by:
• Ardak Amangeldyevich Nurmukhambetov, PhD, Acting Associate Professor, Department of History of Kazakhstan and Social Sciences — “The Golden Horde: History and Historical Legacy.”
• Erlan Edlovich Akchalov, Associate Professor, Department of Screen Arts Directing — “The Golden Horde as a Code of National Identity: New Challenges for Cinema and Television.”
The round table will be moderated by Professor Kabyl Zamanbekovich Khalykov, Doctor of Philosophy, Vice-Rector for Research of the Temirbek Zhurgenov Kazakh National Academy of Arts.
Participants include representatives of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan, university faculty members, researchers, doctoral candidates, master’s students, undergraduate students, early-career scholars, and members of the creative community.
