On August 14, 2026, the Temirbek Zhurgenov Kazakh National Academy of Arts hosted a scientific round table entitled “The Image of the Golden Horde in Cinema, Theatre and Visual Culture.”
The event was organized as part of the implementation of the media plan of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan for information support aimed at promoting the historical heritage of the Ulus of Jochi.
The main objective of the round table was to study and promote the historical and cultural heritage of the Ulus of Jochi, highlight the historical significance of the Golden Horde in the formation of Kazakh statehood, and present its image through contemporary cinema, theatre and visual culture.
The event was opened with a welcoming address by Arman Adilkhanuly Zhudebayev, Rector of the Temirbek Zhurgenov Kazakh National Academy of Arts, Honored Figure of Kazakhstan and recipient of the Order of “Qurmet”.
The round table featured a number of topical presentations. Erlan Edlovich Akchalov, Associate Professor of the Department of Screen Arts Directing, delivered a presentation entitled “The Golden Horde as a Code of National Identity: New Challenges for Cinema and Television.” His presentation focused on the possibilities and current challenges of representing the Golden Horde in screen arts.
Ardak Amangeldievich Nurmukhambetov, PhD, Acting Associate Professor of the Department of History of Kazakhstan and Social Sciences, presented a paper entitled “The Golden Horde: History and Lessons,” highlighting the historical heritage of the Ulus of Jochi and its significance for contemporary society.
The round table was moderated by Kabyl Zamanbekovich Khalikov, Doctor of Philosophy, Vice-Rector for Research at the Academy.
The event brought together the Academy’s faculty members, public figures, doctoral and master’s students, young researchers, and representatives of the creative community.
The discussion focused on promoting the historical heritage of the Ulus of Jochi within the contemporary cultural and artistic space, artistic interpretations of historical narratives in cinema, theatre and visual arts, the development of historical consciousness and national identity, as well as the involvement of young researchers and creative professionals in projects dedicated to this field.
Following the round table, the participants adopted a resolution and put forward a number of proposals aimed at promoting the historical and cultural heritage of the Ulus of Jochi through academic and creative initiatives, including:
- Organizing an international scientific and practical conference entitled “The Ulus of Jochi and the Golden Horde: History, Art and Culture”;
- Organizing creative competitions aimed at promoting the history and culture of the Golden Horde through cinema, theatre and visual arts;
- Holding competitions among students and young researchers for short films, documentaries, video works and social videos;
- Developing theatrical productions, dramatic works and stage projects on the theme “The Image of the Golden Horde”;
- Organizing artistic and educational exhibitions dedicated to the historical heritage of the Ulus of Jochi;
- Supporting research and artistic projects by young scholars and creative youth, including opportunities to participate in grant-based and project initiatives;
- Organizing competitions for screenplays and dramatic works dedicated to the history and heritage of the Golden Horde;
- Developing a series of educational videos, podcasts, documentary projects and digital content dedicated to the historical and cultural heritage of the Ulus of Jochi.
The event served as an important platform for discussion aimed at promoting the historical heritage of the Ulus of Jochi through the arts, strengthening historical memory and national identity, and fostering greater interaction between academic research and the creative sector.
