Language week report
18 – 22 November 2024 in Temirbek Zhurgenov KazNAI an annual language week “Language and Culture” was held. It was organized by the Department of Foreign Languages and APK under the guidance of the head of the department Associate Professor Zh.S. Kanlybaeva.
On November 18, 2024 the opening ceremony of the Languages week ‘Language and Culture’ took place. The central idea of the event was to understand the heritage of William Shakespeare in the modern world, which was reflected in the theme “LANGUAGE OF SHAKESPEARE IN MODERN CULTURE. ROMEO AND JULIET’.
First year students from the Film and Television department presented an impressive video dedicated to the work of the great playwright, then first and second year students from the Theatre department performed an extract from the immortal tragedy ‘Romeo and Juliet’. The event concluded with musical performances in various languages, highlighting the richness and diversity of world culture.
On November 19, 2024 a debate on the topic “Language and Culture” was organized. Students from the following Almaty Universities took part in this event. The debate was held in English.

The Grand Prix was won by a team of students from Kurmangazy Kazakh National Conservatory. The 1st prize went to the team of students from Abylai Khan Kazakh University of International Relations and World Languages. 2nd place went to students of Temirbek Zhurgenov Kazakh National Academy of Arts, 3rd place – students of the Almaty University of Management and Al-Farabi KazNU.
On 20 November 2024 in the Cinema hall of the academy there was a meeting of the ART Lounge dedicated to the theme of the week. Students of the academy discussed the theme LANGUAGE AND CULTURE, presented their arguments about modern trends in the development of languages, about language as a reflection of people’s culture, including youth slang and the language of the Internet, read poems of their own composition dedicated to their mother tongue, performed musical works in different languages. Guests at the Art Lounge were students from Abylai Khan Kazakh University of International Relations and World Languages, who presented their views on the relationship between language and culture.
On 21 November 2024, within the framework of the annual Languages week, an intellectual game “ALL-ROUND ENGLISH QUIZ” was held in the cinema hall with the participation of the students of our academy. The purpose of the quiz is to increase the interest in learning English and to develop the cognitive activity of the students.
The quiz was divided into themes: “Art”, “Famous sights of the world”, “Holidays and traditions”, “Great celebrities”, “My country – Kazakhstan” and “English-speaking countries”. Three teams participated in the quiz. At the end of the game, the team with the most points was declared the winner.
The closing ceremony of the Language Week, entitled ‘The Creative Spirit of Art’, was held on 22 November 2024. The event summarised the results of the week and thanked the students for their active participation in the language week.
Within the framework of the event, a concert programme was presented, which included songs in different languages (Kazakh, English, Korean, German), theatre performances, presentations, a quiz and other interesting acts. The programme ended with a performance of the Atameken song.
The Languages week has become a tradition of the Department of Foreign Languages and the APK of the academy, each year this event is filled with new content and contributes to the formation of the personality of intercultural communication.
