PRESS RELEASE on the III International Congress “CHILDREN AND BOOKS IN A POLYCULTURAL WORLD” September 26-27, 2022

Main idea of ​​the event is to unite the efforts of teachers, scientists, librarians, publishers, translators to promote children’s literature in Kazakhstan and in the world; discuss challenges of reading and preservation of the heritage of national literature for children.

  • • Russian’s Institute for Literary Translation (Moscow, Russia)
  • • “Peace through Spirituality” Public Association (Astana, Kazakhstan)

Main Speakers: Eleonora Suleimenova,  Doctor of Philology, Professor, the SEC APK member, President of KazPryal (Kazakhstan); Anna Esparza, culturologist (France-Russia), Nina Dashevskaya, children’s author (Russia); Nursulu Shaimerdenova, fairy tales writer (Kazakhstan); Nadezhda Teplyakova,  researcher and bibliologist in children’s Literature (Kazakhstan); Evgeny Reznichenko, Head of the Russian’s Institute for Literary Translation, translator (Russia); Saule Mukhashova,  Chairman of the Board of Directors of the “Peace through Spirituality” Public Association (Kazakhstan), etc.

The event will also be attended by representatives of the Department of Education of the Almaty city, Republican Book Chamber, Publishing Houses of children’s books (“Tentek” and “Almatykitap”), representatives of public unions and associations.

There are more than 150 participants in the Congress from Azerbaijan, China, Israel, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Japan, Russian Federation, Uzbekistan. The Congress is held both in online and offline modes being focused in following directions: 

  • • Children’s Literature: challenges of the arrived Future
  • • Childhood culture and LIFESTYLE of modern society
  • • Reflection of the history of the country and people in children’s books
  • • Children’s literature for the little ones: new approaches and formats
  • • Children’s literature in the mirror of translation

Event Results:

• Collection of the Congress participants speeches published and placed in the public domain on the website of the organizers;

• Recommendations for  development of children’s literature in Kazakhstan  (resolution of the Congress will be sent to the SEC APK and specialized departments for consideration);

• Program for opening of the National Section of the International Council for Children’s Books (IBBY) in Kazakhstan (https://www.ibby.org/);

• Agreement to launch international projects in the field of translation modern children’s literature (Kazakh – into Russian; Russian – into Kazakh); it is planned to be implemented jointly with partners from Russian’s Institute for Literary Translation;

• Mechanisms for collaborative work of teachers from the CIS countries on issues to improve functional and reading literacy (within PISA and PIRLS);

• Author’s projects of the “ALTAIR”, the Academy of Children’s Book and Kazakh National Academy of Arts named after T.K. Zhurgenov on development of the reading culture of children and adults to be recommended for implementation of the National Project “Reading School”.
