PLENARY SESSION of the International Congress of Culture and Art Workers “TURKIC CULTURE: COMMON ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT VARIATIONS”, dedicated to the 125th anniversary of Temirbek Zhurgenov

On the first day of the Congress, May 30, 2023, a Plenary session was held, which was opened by the rector of the Temirbek Zhurgenov Kazakh National Academy of Arts Azamat Satybaldy.

At the opening of the Congress, a documentary film about Temirbek Zhurgenov was shown (direction and editing – Raiymbek Alzhanov, teacher of the Department of History and Film Theory of KazNAA named after Temirbek Zhurgenov).

The plenary session was chaired by Amirbekov Sharipbek Agabayevich, vice-rector for educational and methodological work of Temirbek Zhurgenov KazNAA.

During the plenary session, presentations were made by:

Svanibor Pettan, President of ICTM, Chairman of the Research Group on Music and Minorities, University of Ljubljana, Professor of the Faculty of Arts (Musicology) made presentation on the topic “ICTM and scholars from Turkic-speaking countries” (Slovenia). In his report, Svanibor Pettan spoke about the work of the International Council of Traditional Music (ICTM), which includes representatives of such Turkic-speaking countries as Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

Gokdag Ebru, PhD, Anadolu University (Turkey) made the report on the topic “Ankara Experimental Theater and its efforts to revive the traditions of the peasant theater.” Gokdag Ebru noted in her speech that the invitation to participate in this International Congress not only highlights the importance of cultural exchange and cooperation, but also provides a valuable platform for scientists and artists to come together and explore the richness and diversity of Turkic culture. She gave information about two theatrical traditions that exist in Turkey: the folk theater tradition and the peasant theater tradition.

Milia Glukhovich, PhD from the University of Warwick (Coventry, UK), theater critic on the topic “Focusing research, discussing boundaries”. Miliya Glukhovich noted in her report: “One of the reasons for my interest in this conference is that I am currently developing a research project on theater and performance along the historical and new Silk Roads. Modern theater in Kazakhstan, Central Asian countries and other Turkic-speaking states will be an important part of this project. The project will also explore the history, heritage and culture of the Silk Road in Central Asia, Southeast Asia and Southeast Europe and in the project will participate theater scholars, theater institutions and festivals from these regions. I hope that participation in this conference will create an excellent opportunity to meet with scientists working in this field of research to explore creative synergies and interests for future collaborations and partnerships”.

Benjamin Sota, Professor of Physical Theatre, Coastal Carolina University, Conway, (South Carolina, USA) made a report on the theme “The Market Stage: The Theatrical Pulse of Marketplaces”. Emma Howes, PhD, Coastal Carolina University, Associate Professor of English, Affiliated Faculty First Year Coordinator (USA) made a report on the theme “Rare Collaborations: Sharing the Cross-Cultural Spirit of the Market”.

Ishankhodjaeva Zamira Raimovna, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor of the Department of History of Uzbekistan, National University of Uzbekistan named after M. Ulugbek made a presentation on the theme “The origins of the Soviet cultural policy in Uzbekistan in 1920-1930” (Tashkent, Uzbekistan).

Akhmedova Nigora Rakhimovna, Doctor of Arts, Professor, Academician of the Academy of Arts of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Chief Researcher of the Institute of Art Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan made a report about the humanistic values and traditions of the Turkic world in the modern socio-cultural context of Central Asia (Tashkent, Uzbekistan)

Nusipzhanova Bibigul Nurgalievna, rector of the Kazakh National Academy of Choreography, gave information about new materials about Kazpedvuz – the first Kazakh university in Tashkent.

Sabi Ansat, Chairman of the “Public Fund named after. T. Zhurgenov” introduced the audience to the activities of the public fund named after. T. Zhurgenova (Kyzylorda).

Bekarystan Myrzabay – Zhurgenov, Director of the Department of Monument Protection of the Regional Museum (Aktobe) made a presentation on the topic “Temirbek Zhurgenov in the memory of the people”. The International Congress was attended by researchers, cultural, literary, art figures, representatives of the public of the following countries: Azerbaijan, England, Hungary, Kyrgyzstan, Russia (KCR, Moscow, Tatarstan), Slovenia, USA, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, as well as researchers from leading universities of art in Kazakhstan.

The Congress is organized by the Research Center for Postgraduate Education (Scientific Editorial Department) RSU “Temirbek Zhurgenov Kazakh National Academy of Arts” of the Committee of Culture of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan together with the faculties of the Academy.

As part of the events of the International Congress, sectional meetings of five sections of the Congress were held, as well as master classes by such well-known scientists and researchers as Svanibor Pettan – President of ICTM, Chairman of the Research Group on Music and Minorities, University of Ljubljana, Professor of the Faculty of  Arts (Musicology), (Slovenia) on the topic: “The study of minority music in national settings and beyond”; Gokdag Ebru – PhD, University of Anadolu, State Conservatory, Department of Performing Arts, (Anadolu, Turkia) on the topic: “Theatre of the Oppressed methods”; Milia Glukhovich – University of Warwick, PhD, theater critic (Coventry, UK) on the topic: “Centering research, negotiating margins”.

As part of the Congress events, the following were also organized: the publication of the book “Temirbek Zhurgenov and the cultural revival of Kazakhstan in the 30s. 20th century”; exhibition of artworks dedicated to T. Zhurgenov and master classes of masters of decorative art; Exhibition of books about T. Zhurgenov; a concert of Kazakh folk music in the foyer of the academy during the registration of participants, as well as a gala concert dedicated to the closing of the Congress on May 31, 2023.
